While standard engines used a fixed set of gears, a CVT system has two hydraulically operated adjustable pulleys connected by a chain. This allows the engine to move them closer or farther as needed, and simulates the best gear at any speed. This not only increases fuel efficiency, it even gives a smoother ride.
